Microsoft BizSpark

clock November 11, 2008 05:05 by author Admin
I just subscribed to the new Microsoft BizSpark program. Basically it is a very low cost (free) way for startups to gain access to MSDN and all the goodies (software) that come with it. This is a very important new program from MS because one of the major reasons so many startups go down the LAMP (Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP) path rather than ASP.NET is because of the initial startup costs associated with Windows. It could cost thousands of dollars to outfit a few developers with all the tools they need to get going on Windows, an expense many garage startups will baulk at. And given that the latest versions of .NET coupled with the latest versions of Windows and SQL Server are a clearly more scalable platform than LAMP with better development tools, new startups will have to seriously consider forgoing the Linux geek points they will generate and look at Windows.

Amazon EC2 supporting windows

clock October 2, 2008 05:37 by author Admin
Big news coming is that Amazon EC2 will soon support Windows. This means low cost and high scalability Windows hosting will soon be available. One of the major reasons people choose Linux as a web hosting platform over Windows is that the cost of hosting is much lower and therefore scalabilty much more easily achieved. Hopefully EC2 will push Windows and ASP.NET adoption.

Olympics

clock August 16, 2008 20:54 by author craig
I haven't been watching much of the Olympics as my wife and I celebrated the birth of our first child a few days ago :-) But I did wander over to www.nbcolympics.com site to see what all the fuss was about (it's Microsoft big Silverlight showcase site). Unfortunately in their infinite wisdom, the IOC have decided they can make more money by selling the media rights to each country individually so the site is off limits to those outside the USA. I did notice how well the USA were going though leading the medal count on 16 gold ahead of the Chinese on 27. Say what?? Apparently a bronze and a gold are worth the same according to the good old US of A. Some creative mathematics that! As they say, "Only in America".

WebEquity.com.au

clock August 7, 2008 10:31 by author craig
I stumbled across an interesting new site for startups and people trying to startup new web companies today. It is called www.webequity.com.au. The site tries to connect people with money with people who can make it happen, so if you have a great business idea and need to get a few partners to make it happen then I would recommend taking a look. Developers, designers, hosts all need apply. A good article can be found here http://www.sitepoint.com/blogs/2008/08/07/webequity-australias-sweat-equity-marketplace/

Email jobs

clock July 31, 2008 20:06 by author craig
One feature that is almost required on a job site these days is to be emailed a list of jobs that may interest you. With JobTree.com.au you can perform a search with your preferred criteria and then click 'Email jobs like this'. You can be sent an email Daily, Weekly, Fortnightly or Monthly. Don't miss a potential job opportunity when it will only take 2 minutes to set up an email.

Advertise your skills

clock July 25, 2008 19:03 by author craig

If you are looking for work or someone looking for the right new employee, take a look at the job seekers page. It will only take 5 minutes to add your profile and if the right company comes by you could land your next contract. And if you are looking for the right person take a look at the job seekers page before advertising.

Development stuff

clock July 23, 2008 19:50 by author Admin
At heart I'm a geek, so expect to see a few development related posts on this blog. Any ASP.NET developers with a keen eye will notice that the JobTree.com.au web site is built with Microsoft's new MVC framework (http://asp.net/mvc). I have been surprised at how stable and useable this new framework has been right from the start, and while each new release seems to break a few things from the last, that is expected with a CTP (how many different words do we need for beta these days BTW). If you haven't tried MVC, give it a go.

Not another job site!

clock July 23, 2008 18:18 by author Admin

Another job board?? I hear you. There are plenty of job boards in Australia, other than the big couple there are several others who want to take their place. Some of the hot new boards can be seen as JobTree supporters on the home page. So why would I create a new job board? Because the people are pleading for it.

JobTree is aimed squarely at technical people using Microsoft technologies and these people have real frustrations with some sites.

  • Searching is hard. Every time I see a new job board I type in C# in the search field. At least 50% of the time the search fails because of the inability of the search engine to cope with non text characters.
  • Agency infestation. Most of the big boards have at least 90% of the ads submitted by agencies. IT people hate these gate keepers, not even knowing if they are applying for a real job. JobTree wont turn agencies away, but there will be benefits for companies advertising directly.
  • Price. How can agents afford to place so many ads when it costs us so much on the majors? Because they are only paying 20% of what we pay for the same ad.
  • When a site is getting new 500 jobs a day in your category, your job ad is soon lost in the traffic. Australia's biggest job board is encouraging people to re-place their advertisement every few days to get it back to the top of the list. Good news for them, bad news for your wallet.
  • New sites often make a big splash, but often are getting only a couple of new jobs a day. Hardly compelling you to revisit.

Everything about JobTree is aimed at techies and developers.

  • If a company advertises directly, it will be featured on the home page and top of the search results.
  • Value adds for tech people like user group updates and promotions.
  • Less than half the price of some other boards, and even less again if you ask your user group for a promo code.
  • 1000's of ads from the JobTree supporter sites means there is always reason to come back.
If you have any feedback about what you want in a job site and how the others are letting you down, please leave a comment.
